THE PREDICTION
World number 43 Sloane Stephens won the seventh WTA title of her career at the Guadalajara Open back in February but since then she has lost three of four matches played, including her first clay-court match of the season in three sets to Qinwen Zheng at the Charleston Open. The 29-year-old is excellent on the surface, though, on her day and she finished runner-up to Simona Halep at Roland-Garros in 2018, the year after winning her first and only Grand Slam at the US Open. 25-year-old Anhelina Kalinina set a career-high WTA world ranking of 36th earlier this month after a run to the quarter-finals if the Charleston Open, where she beat the fifth seed Elena Rybakina before falling foul of an inspired Ons Jabeur. The Ukrainian has found some serious form over the last few months and it would not be a surprise to see her stun Stephens early in Madrid, with the American both well capable of winning or losing this on her own racket. This is tough to call but taking Kalinina to win at least a set looks the wiser way to lean here.
