THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Sloane Stephens won the US Open in 2017 and she reached the final of Roland-Garros the summer after, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep. The current world number 36 has started 2023 in torrid form but she is always capable of bursting into her best tennis at a moment’s notice, with a run to the last eight in Paris last season coming totally out of the blue. Stephens made the semi-finals here way back in 2013, her first big foray at a major, but she has failed to win her first match in Melbourne in each of the past three seasons with little run-up before the tournament to gather some momentum. World number 45 Anastasia Potapova is a tough draw for the American but perhaps, at this exact moment, the Russian is fairly vulnerable after pulling out of her most recent match at Adelaide 2 with an injury.
21-year-old Potapova has a big future ahead of her, and she started it last season with a maiden WTA title in Istanbul and a runners-up trophy in Prague, but with neither player winning yet in 2023 this looks a definite match to avoid. Stephens should sneak through in three sets, or earn at least one, but leave this one well away from an accumulator.
