THE PREDICTION

World number 26 Sebastian Korda received a bye to the round of 16 as the third seed this week in Bucharest and he should be considered a genuine contender in a wide-open field. The 23-year-old has struggled to get his promising career back up-and-running following an injury early last season but he claimed his maiden ATP title on clay at the Parma Open in 2022 to prove his credentials on this surface.

World number 128 Gregoire Barrere has preferred his tennis on the faster surfaces in recent seasons but he should not be underestimated, capable as he is of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests. The 30-year-old qualified handily this weekend before a straight-sets opener over fellow heavy-hitter Thanasi Kokkinakis on Wednesday but Korda looked in solid shape at Monte-Carlo before meeting Jannik Sinner too early to really get going on clay. It has taken top 20 opposition to beat the American ever since the Australian Open in January so back him to reach the quarter-finals.

TIP: SEBASTIAN KORDA TO WIN
