World number eight Daniil Medvedev survived an early test by popular Aussie John Millman on Wednesday before eventually winning in three comfortable sets. The 26-year-old has finished runner-up at each of the last two Australian Opens, first to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then from two sets up to Rafael Nadal in last season’s modern classic. Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2021 with a masterclass against Novak Djokovic but he has not beaten a top 10 player on tour since Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals here last season.
THE PREDICTION
This could end up a thriller on Friday between former world number one Daniil Medvedev and number 31 Sebastian Korda, with their previous encounter going the Russian’s way in three sets at the 2021 Paris Masters. 22-year-old Korda looks set for a career-best season this year after reaching the final in three of his last four tournaments on tour: finishing runner-up to Andrey Rublev in Gijon, Felix Auger-Aliassime in Antwerp and Novak Djokovic from a set up at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago. Medvedev has looked dialled-in enough in Melbourne to back as the eventual winner of this clash but sets should go both ways with Korda looking strong so far. Back the Russian to won outright as he, increasingly, looks like reaching another final in Melbourne.
