THE LOWDOWN

World number four Carlo Alcaraz won his maiden title at the Umag Open last summer to create some hype coming into the US Open but he fully announced himself on the world stage in New York with a huge run to the quarter-finals. Just a year on, the Spaniard is expected to reach those heights at the least and that pressure looks to have told over the summer with tough-to-take exits at Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the two recent Masters events in Montreal and Cincinnati. 19-year-old Alcaraz won four more ATP titles this season, including two Masters events in Miami and Madrid, and he remains a serious contender for the title here.

THE PREDICTION

World number 37 Sebastian Baez is unlucky not be coming into his debut at the US Open as a seeded player after doing so at Wimbledon last month but takes a six-match losing streak into round one since finishing runner-up to Francisco Cerundolo at the Bastad Open last month. The Argentine was a last-minute addition to last season’s ATP Next Gen Finals but he proved himself a worthy one with a run to the semi-finals before eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz ousted him in straight sets. Alcaraz should be able to repeat that feat here against a the currently out-of-sorts 21-year-old.
