World number 163 Roman Safiullin enjoyed the win of his career on Friday with a straight-sets shocking of top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 24-year-old was exceptional at the ATP Cup earlier this season where he helped drag an under-strength Team Russia all the way to the semi-finals but it has taken a month to regain that level and, clearly, then some. Alongside Daniil Medvedev, Safiullin lost the ATP Cup semi-finals to the winning Canadian pairing of Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime but this will be the first singles match between the two. World number nine Auger-Aliassime won his first ATP title last weekend at the Rotterdam Open against Tsitsipas and the Greek’s early exit here has bolstered his chances of making it back-to-back title hugely. The 21-year-old is unlikely to drop out here with Safiullin’s element of surprise gone but the Russian has played well enough to opt for FAA to win outright.
