The world number 193 is still seeking a first tour-level win but she came very close to doing so at the Austin Open earlier this month in a tight three-set defeat to Caty McNally and she will be well-backed as the American underdog here on Wednesday. 30-year-old Ana Bogdan set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 46th late last season after enjoying a burst of form on her favoured clay and she will be eagerly anticipating the tour’s full return to the surface next month after a tough start to 2023. A recent run to the round of 16 at the Dubai Masters is proof that the Romanian remains the firm favourite to come through comfortably here but with that option unlikely to be all that valuable it could be worth taking Montgomery to earn at least a set and leaving the victor up to chance.
