THE LOWDOWN

ROBERTO BAUTISTA AGUT

33-year-old Roberto Bautista Agut plays some of his best tennis for Spain but after four-straight victories at the ATP Cup against top opposition he eventually met his math in the final to see Felix Auger-Aliassime win it for Canada. The world number 17’s defeat of Hubert Hurkacz in Sydney is a pretty impressive working level coming into the Australian Open, where he has previously enjoyed success with two quarter-final exits. The Spaniard’s best Grand Slam showing came in the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2019 where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in four sets.

STEFANO TRAVAGLIA

Stefano Travaglia set a career-high ATP world ranking of 60th last February after a shock run to a first ATP tour final at the Great Ocean Road Open, where he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner. The 30-year-old has lost in the first round in each of his last four Grand Slam appearances, with a run to the third round of Roland-Garros halted by eventual champion Rafael Nadal in 2020.

THE PREDICTION

Bautista Agut met Travaglia on court for the first time last summer at the Mallorca Championships and beat the Italian comfortably enough in straight sets on grass. The Spaniard’s searing start to the season for Spain at the ATP Cup was halted at the last by Felix Auger-Aliassime but he is a pretty solid banker to reach at least the third round of Grand Slams without too much fuss. Stefano Travaglia has drawn a short straw here, with RBA looking likely to take this opener in three sets.
