THE PREDICTION
This is an odd twist of fate with a few outside factors to consider as compatriots Richard Gasquet and Ugo Humbert meet in the first round of the Australian Open for the second year running. Former world number seven Gasquet came back from a set down to beat Humbert here last year before both players were forced to pull out of the tournament, Gasquet after the second round, with covid-19. Former world number 25 Humbert had started 2022 with a remarkable victory over incoming number one Daniil Medvedev but complications following his illness saw him end the season with a woeful 9-21 record – form that he looks set to struggle with for some time yet after losing in straight sets to Christopher Eubanks last week in Auckland. 36-year-old Gasquet enjoyed an excellent campaign in New Zealand to claim the 16th title of his illustrious career, and a first since 2018, when he came back from a set down to beat Cam Norrie.
Gasquet beat Humbert for a second time in Montpellier last February to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head but both matches saw sets go both ways and Humbert will likely have some extra stock in this third encounter. Back Gasquet to earn at least two sets and consider adding at least a tiebreak with three amongst their seven sets played so far.
