THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Dominic Thiem grabbed his first tour-level win of the season in three tight sets over Maximilian Marterer as he continues to struggle post-surgery. The 30-year-old’s most recent of 17 career ATP titles was his first Grand Slam at the US Open in 2020, coming back from two sets down to stun Alexander Zverev, but it looks increasingly like he will never fully return to that level on tour after two tough seasons following wrist surgery.

Former world number seven Richard Gasquet enjoyed some renaissance form early last season, beating Cam Norrie to his 16th ATP title in Auckland, but he has endured a tough past 12 months or so since to fall back to world number 122. The 37-year-old veteran received a bye to the round of 16 as a lucky loser following defeat to Lucas Pouille in qualifying and that double bounce could be the second wind that sees him outlast this version of Dominic Thiem. The Austrian has won each of their last three matches, including last April in Monte-Carlo, to take a 3-2 lead in their head-to-head but back lucky loser Gasquet to snatch at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: RICHARD GASQUET TO WIN A SET
