23-year-old Rebeka Masarova should break the top 90 on tour for the first time after qualifying for the Indian Wells main draw with room to spare this week. The Spaniard finished runner-up to Coco Gauff at the Auckland Classic back in January, her maiden WTA tour final, but she has since claimed just one win at tour-level. That win was against a top player in Ekaterina Alexandrova, though, and Masarova should not be underestimated here despite facing a promising young wildcard who will garner most of the support. 21-year-old Peyton Stearns comes into Indian Wells at a career-high WTA world ranking of 126th after reaching the quarter-finals of the Austin Open last week, where she lost in straight sets to fellow home hopeful Katie Volynets. Stearns has reached three ITF finals this season and won two of them for some strong recent form but Masarova’s qualifying campaign will see her battle-hardened and ready for a scrap. Back Masarova to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
