THE LOWDOWN

World number two Rafael Nadal started 2022 off an injury doubt after a long period away from the tour but the Spaniard stunned the field at the Australian Open to set a new Men’s Grand Slam Singles record at 21 titles. The now 36-year-old veteran then went on to even more incredible heights by claiming a miraculous 14th Roland-Garros title with one foot almost permanently numbed throughout, extending that record to 22 Grand Slams before Novak Djokovic pulled back within one at Wimbledon. Nadal was forced to withdraw from the semi-finals at Wimbledon after an injury suffered against Taylor Fritz in a five-set epic in the quarter-finals and he has since played just six tour-level matches, winning three of them.

25-year-old Taylor Fritz set a new career-high ATP world ranking of ninth this week after a career-best season looked to come to an end but Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the ATP Finals saw the American sneak in to make his debut. The American claimed his first Masters title this season, at an injured Rafael Nadal’s expense at Indian Wells, and claimed two further titles in Eastbourne and Tokyo. His best run on tour was ended by Nadal in a thrilling five set epic at Wimbledon, reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time after making the second week for a first time in Melbourne at the start of the season.

THE PREDICTION

Taylor Fritz’ best season on tour has been inextricably linked to Rafael Nadal and injuries. Nadal’s early 20-match winning streak was ended by the American in the final at Indian Wells, with Nadal hampered by a rib injury he picked up in a victory over Carlos Alcaraz the round before, but the Spaniard returned the favour at Wimbledon with both players on their last legs. Neither player has been able to rediscover their best form since the summer, with injuries hampering both over the last few months, but Nadal is seriously out of match practice after an early exit to Tommy Paul in Paris last time out and Fritz has nothing to lose here. The American’s last-minute inclusion in Turin will give him a big boost mentality-wise and his motive for revenge, in conditions that suit his game over the Spaniard’s, make taking him to edge this encounter a reasonable risk.
