THE LOWDOWN

World number two Rafael Nadal looks to be ending 2022 in one of his lower ebbs after Taylor Fritz made it three defeats on the spin to American players with a straight-sets result on Sunday. 36-year-old Nadal, however, started this season off on fire with a 20-match winning streak seeing him take ATP titles in Melbourne, Acapulco and a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The Spaniard extended that record to 22 major titles at Roland-Garros this summer and despite his current fitness woes it would be a surprise not to see him gearing up for a 15th trophy at the French Open next summer.

World number six Felix Auger-Aliassime recently won three ATP titles in three weeks in Florence, Antwerp and Basel before a run to the semi-finals of the Paris Masters saw him lose out to eventual champion Holger Rune. The 22-year-old lost his ATP Finals debut to Casper Ruud in straight sets on Sunday but he should be the better for it in his next two matches. Auger-Aliassime has beaten the likes of Carlos Alcaraz (twice) and Novak Djokovic, albeit at the Laver Cup, in recent months.

THE PREDICTION

Rafael Nadal has won both of his previous meetings with Felix Auger-Aliassime but the Canadian almost ousted him over five sets this summer before defeat in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros. If this match were to be judged on form alone then the Canadian would be the solid favourite to heap more misery on Nadal after recently enjoying the biggest winning streak of his young career but back-to-back defeats in Paris and to Casper Ruud on Sunday make this a trickier prospect. Nadal should be better for an early upset against Taylor Fritz but the fact is that the Spaniard has exceeded expectations, and perhaps his body’s limit, this year. Three sets seem likelier than two but backing Auger-Aliassime to win at least one of them looks the sensible way to lean.
