World number six Maria Sakkari received a bye to the round of 16 at the Zhengzhou Open as the third seed this week and she should be considered a serious title contender on recent form. The 28-year-old finally broke her duck of poor performances in semi-finals and finals with a hugely relieving, title-winning campaign at the Guadalajara Masters last moth and defeats to Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff in her most recent two tournaments are more like it after a pretty inexplicable season. World number 24 Qinwen Zheng will have been hugely disappointed not to perform at the China Open following her Gold Medal at the Asian Games but the 21-year-old beat tour veteran Kateryna Volodko in straight sets on Monday to put her early exit in Beijing behind her. The Chinese number one will be backed to the hilt this week but she is struggling off the court after losing her coach, Wim Fissette, to Naomi Osaka in a rather unsatisfactory way. Sakkari looks capable of finishing 2023 off very strongly indeed but this is a tough opener in Zhengzhou. Back the Greek to win outright with three sets about as likely as two.
