THE PREDICTION
Both Qinwen Zheng and Liudmila Samsonova will set new career-high WTA world rankings after making the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open, with 20-year-old Zheng set to reach around 24th and 24-year-old Samsonova around 17th. The pair met in last season’s Tokyo Open final where Samsonova claimed her fourth WTA title, and third of the season, in straight sets but Qinwen Zheng won their first encounter at the Palermo Ladies Open in 2021. Both players also have some exceptional results behind them already this week, with Zheng beating Jelena Ostapenko and top Daria Kasatkina whilst Samsonova ousted Barbora Krejcikova and Veronika Kudermetova. With little between them this week, recent results suggest Samsonova has the edge in these conditions but this could be a proper thriller on Saturday between two players on the up. Back the Russian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable finalists.
