19-year-old Polina Kudermetova, sister of current world number nine Veronika, qualified with flying colours this week to make her Grand Slam and WTA tour debut here in the biggest match of her career. The Russian enjoyed plenty of success on the futures circuit last season and with the right draw here she could be yet another surprise package here in Melbourne, with this opener against wildcard Olivia Gadecki a huge opportunity. World number 199 Gadecki enjoyed some good results on the ITF circuit late last season but Kudermetova’s run from the qualifiers could be the deciding factor here. Gadecki will take the backing of whatever size crowd turns up to watch this one but it is unlikely to be a hefty audience early on the first day. Back Kudermetova to win outright.
