THE PREDICTION

World number 34 Petra Martic came back from a set down to beat top seed Maria Sakkari on Saturday to blow the tournament wide open. The 31-year-old claimed her second WTA title last summer on clay at the Lausanne Ladies Open but this would be a first on hardcourts after she lost the 2019 Zhengzhou Open in her first attempt. World number 44 Anastasia Potapova is another surprise finalist after the Russian stunned Marketa Vondrousova in three sets, her fourth match in a row in which a decider was required. Potapova is also facing her second attempt at a hardcourt title after losing the Prague Open final to Marie Bouzkova late last season and similarly she claimed a clay-court title last summer at the Istanbul Cup, beating Martic in the second round where the Croat maiden title back in 2019. With some interesting comparisons between the two and a win apiece in their head-to-head there are more questions than answers here. Taking the match to see three sets could be a valuable way to avoid picking a winner but with Martic looking the steadier of two very capable champions back the Croat to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
