Former world number two Petra Kvitova was shocked by rising star Diana Shnaider at the Ningbo Open on Thursday in a three-set result that got better with age after Shnaider went on to finish runner-up. 33-year-old Kvitova is at peace with her reduced schedule, and erratic performance levels, these days to make her a very unpredictable player with a high ceiling and low floor on tour but she will be eager to add Beijing to her 31 career WTA titles after finishing runner-up here in 2014. World number 58 Xiyu Wang should not be underestimated here, though, after winning her maiden WTA title at the Guangzhou Open last weekend. The 22-year-old lost two days later in Ningbo to reset her streak but it is likely that she brings some real tenacity to this first meeting with Kvitova, backed by a raucous home support in Beijing. Kvitova should be coming through this test but consider taking Wang to earn at least a set to leave the result up to chance.
