THE LOWDOWN

PETRA KVITOVA

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was an Australian Open runner-up in 2019 to Naomi Osaka and a win at the Doha Open last season was her 28th career WTA title to date. The 31-year-old former world number one has suffered many setbacks in her career, not least the knife attack at her home in December 2016 that saw her miss half of the 2017 season, but she has struggled for form over the last few months with a few injuries.

SORANA CIRSTEA

31-year-old Sorana Cirstea won her second career WTA title last season at the Istanbul Open a whole 13 years after her first at the Tashkent Open. The world number 38 set a career-high of 21st in the WTA world rankings back in 2013 and her best Grand Slam showing to date was a quarter-finals exit at Roland-Garros back in 2009.

THE PREDICTION

This looks like a really tough draw for Petra Kvitova as she continues to struggle for form, with Sorana Cirstea beating the Czech in the second round here last season. Overall, Kvitova leads their head-to-head record 5-3 but the two-time Grand Slam champion, and runner-up here in 2019, has not been able to get a rhythm to her game for some time. The 31-year-old remains the favourite on legacy here above all else but take Cirstea to win at least a set in what looks likely to see three.
