Former world number nine Roberto Bautista Agut grabbed an excellent opening victory over Miomir Kecmanovic, last season’s runner-up, on Monday as he continues his journey back from a poor 2023. The 35-year-old may never make it back to his once stalwart position inside the top 20 but he remains one of the most compact, versatile tennis players on tour with a game for all surfaces and a notorious grit that should see him successfully back inside the top 40 one last time.
26-year-old Pedro Martinez set a career-high ATP world ranking of 40th after winning his only ATP title at the Chile Open two years ago and he is still capable of that level on his favoured clay.
