THE PREDICTION

World number 95 Henri Laaksonen beat Pedro Martinez in straight sets at this stage of Roland-Garros back in 2019 but this match looks likely to come much closer. World number 43 Pedro Martinez has improved greatly over the last year or so, especially on his favoured clay on which he won his first ATP title earlier this year at the Chile Open. The 25-year-old is riding a five-match losing streak into the first round, though, whilst Laaksonen brings a three-match losing streak with him to suggest this match could see plenty of twists and turns before a winner is found. Laaksonen enjoyed a run to the third round here last season, beating Roberto Bautista Agut in the second before an injury saw him withdraw from the third against Kei Nisihkori. Unfinished business may be the Swiss’ motivation here and backing him to win at least two sets could be the sensible pick here to leave a winner up to chance. This match looks a decent candidate for five sets.
