THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Liudmila Samsonova set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 15th after reaching the Abu Dhabi Open final two weeks ago, losing from a set up to Belinda Bencic. The Russian found some incredible form on the late hardcourt swing last season to pick up three WTA titles and she will be a force to be reckoned with here after a mini-blip in Doha last week. World number 20 Paula Badosa lost in straight-sets to Beatriz Haddad-Maia in Doha, with her last win coming over the Brazilian at Adelaide 2 last month. The Spaniard’s form and fitness have been questionable so far this season but wins over Anett Kontaveit and Kaia Kanepi in Adelaide suggest she is not far from returning to her previous best. As things stand, though, Samsonova leads Badosa 2-0 in their head-to-head and she looks likely to make that 3-0 today. Back the Russian to win outright.
