THE LOWDOWN

PABLO CARRENO BUSTA

World number 15 Pablo Carreno Busta beat Alex de Minaur on Friday in this third-successive four-set match at the US Open. The 31-year-old is in some of the form of his career all of a sudden, after what has been a choppy season overall, with a career-best title won at the Canada Masters last month. The Spaniard is a two-time semi-finalist here in New York, losing to two runners-up in Kevin Anderson back in 2017 and Alexander Zverev in 2020.

KAREN KHACHANOV

World number 31 Karen Khachanov was 1-1 with Jack Draper in their third round clash before the young Brit was forced out of the third set with a leg injury. Former world number eight Khachanov win the Paris Masters in 2018 but he has since failed to add to his four ATP titles and slipped back down the rankings to swap places with his peers Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. The Russian is through to the round of 16 at the US Open for a first time, although he has reached the quarter-finals at both Roland-Garros in 2019 and Wimbledon last season.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fun ninth edition of a storied rivalry between two of the more baseline-orientated players on tour, with Karen Khachanov leading Pablo Carreno Busta 5-3 as things stand. Khachanov spoiled Carreno Busta’s party at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer after the Spaniard had stunned Novak Djokovic in the last four. Including beating PCB to the Gold Medal match, where he finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev, Khachanov has won three meetings on the spin to suggest he has the edge here but Carreno Busta’s recent form cannot be ignored. Back the Spaniard to win at least two sets and leave the winner up to chance or take the one-off risk on this match going all the way to five.
