World number 15 Pablo Carreno Busta played well to beat Pedro Cachin in straight sets on Tuesday in a good reaction to his shock defeat to Soonwoo Kwon in Adelaide last week. The 31-year-old impressed in a run to the round of 16 here last season before defeat to Matteo Berrettini and he should be considered a creditable threat to the second week as a two-time semi-finalist at the US Open. Carreno Busta claimed the biggest title of his career at the Canada Masters last season but his form has been a little erratic since, perhaps understandably, to suggest that this first meeting with world number 48 Benjamin Bonzi is a tricky one. 26-year-old Bonzi finished runner-up to Tallon Griekspoor in his maiden ATP title at the Pune Open two weeks ago and he came back from a set down to beat Mattia Bellucci on Tuesday for a settler in Melbourne. Sets look likely to fall both ways here, with this a suitable candidate for five sets, but back PCB to win at least two of them as the likelier of two capable victors.
