THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Oscar Otte’s last 12 months is a heart-warming story, culminating in the once unknown Challenger becoming a seed at a Grand Slam for the first time. The German set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 37th this week after reaching the semi-finals of the Halle Open before defeat to Daniil Medvedev, his third semi-final this season with each coming on home soil. Otte burst onto the scene here last season with a stunning display against Andy Murray under the lights in the second round. A tight five-setter did not go his way that day but Otte has been steadily rising up the ranks ever since and a run to the round of 16 at the US Open remains his best achievement to date.

Fellow German Peter Gojowczyk also put in a surprising run to the second week at the US Open before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets. The 32-year-old has failed to push on in the same way Otte has, though, and the younger German is certainly the more comfortable on grass of the two. The pair know each other well having played doubles together on several occasions but Otte is likely to win this first tour-level meeting on opposing sides of the court. Back the 32nd seed to win outright.
