World number 45 Brandon Nakashima ended last season as the Next Gen ATP Finals champion but it has taken the 21-year-old some time to settle into 2023. A straight-sets victory over John Isner at this stage of Indian Wells was a welcome resemblance of some form but he was unfortunate to draw red-hot Daniil Medvedev in the second round, falling in straight sets to the eventual runner-up. World number 85 Oscar Otte also snapped some poor form with a win at Indian Wells but the German lost comfortably to Karen Khachanov in the second and then suffered an early exit at the Phoenix Challenger. After impressing at Grand Slams over the last few seasons it seems like Otte’s level may start to dwindle but Nakashima should be back firing again sooner rather than later. Back the American to win this first meeting outright, although straight sets should do it.
