World number 63 Gregoire Barrere brings a poor five-match losing streak into the Shanghai Masters in a surprising depreciation over the last few months. The 29-year-old enjoyed some of the form of his career on the early hardcourt swing this season and a run to the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International looked like a great springboard for further progress. World number 86 Nuno Borges beat Mikhail Kukushkin at the Astana Open last week to snap a six-match losing streak of his own but he drew a short straw in eventual runner-up Sebastian Korda to scupper any momentum. Both players looked in much better shape at the start of the year but little form between them makes this first encounter a very difficult match to call with any confidence. Despite Borges’ more recent victory, Barrere has shown the better level in these conditions this season. Back the Frenchman to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
