THE PREDICTION

Defending champion Novak Djokovic looked jaded in his opening match on Monday, conceding the second of four sets to an impressive Soonwoo Kwon before battling through. The 35-year-old is a six-time Wimbledon champion hoping to match Roger Federer’s record of seven title at SW19 this fortnight as he attempts to chase down Rafael Nadal, who has won the Australian Open and Roland-Garros this season to set a new Men’s Grand Slam titles record at 22. Djokovic still does not know if he will be able to play the US Open later this year due to restrictions, heaping all the pressure on this Wimbledon campaign as it is unlikely he will be able to return to the Australian Open next season without vaccination.

World number 79 Thanasi Kokkinakis came through a tough-looking opener against Kamil Majchrzak in impressive fashion and the Aussie’s hard-hitting game has plenty of potential to succeed on grass. The 26-year-old won his first ATP title earlier this season at Adelaide 2 before a stunning rum to the Men’s Doubles title at the Australian Open alongside friend and compatriot Nick Kyrgios, with whom he will partner again here at Wimbledon. Kokkinakis has form for challenging top players at Grand Slams, with a memorable five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas last year in Melbourne, and Djokovic’s rusty start to the campaign suggests sets could go both ways here. That makes taking Djokovic to win outright the sensible, uninspiring pick but you could add at least a tiebreak in the match for a little added risk. Each of the Aussie’s last three tour-level matches have seen at least one.
