THE LOWDOWN

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

World number one Novak Djokovic beat Gael Monfils for a record-breaking 18th time on Tuesday to reach the round of 16 at the Madrid Open before being handed a walkover as Andy Murray was forced to pull out with food poisoning. The 34-year-old would likely have preferred to play the match as he continues to seek fierce competition to build up his strength ahead of attempting to defend his Roland-Garros title at the end of this month. Djokovic owns the record for most ATP Masters 1000 titles with 37 after winning the Paris Masters last season, where he beat Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals.

HUBERT HURKACZ

World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz was exceptional on Thursday in a straight-sets victory over an impressive Dusan Lajovic, backing up an excellent victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 25-year-old has really impressed on clay for the first time in his career over the last few weeks, with a run to the quarter-finals at the Monte-Carlo Masters last time out and a Men’s Doubles title won there alongside John Isner, with whom he has reached the last eight here in Madrid. Hurkacz won his first Masters title at the Miami Open last season but his greatest achievement to date remains a run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon later that summer.

THE PREDICTION

If Hubert Hurkacz is to beat Novak Djokovic for a first time this looks one of the better opportunities to do so. Hurkacz has laboured at times this week in Madrid but he has also improved with each round to throw aside the idea that he is uncomfortable on clay, especially at high altitude where the conditions aid his powerful serve and groundstrokes. World number one Djokovic will be well-rested but also lacking in top quality match practice and with each of their last two meetings seeing sets go both ways the valuable pick here looks to be taking Hurkacz to win at least a set. Djokovic remains the favourite to come through as he leads the Pole 3-0 in their head-to-head but it took a deciding tiebreak to separate them in Paris last November.
