23-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic was one of the stories of the Australian Open this time last season when he avoided a first round clash with fellow Serb Novak Djokovic, who was deported, and never looked back to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time. Kecmanovic is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 28th after that huge boost in confidence saw him transform into an all-court threat, having previously been labelled a clay specialist, with two quarter-final exits at Indian Wells and the Miami Masters to the eventual champions Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz – both in three sets – particularly impressive. Kecmanovic stands to lose a large chunk of his ranking points of he cannot emulate last season’s run here in Melbourne but he has been granted a kind opening fixture against world number 155 Nicolas Jarry. 27-year-old Jarry broke the top 40 as recently as 2019 but injuries and poor form have seen the Chilean drift back into obscurity on tour.
Jarry qualified well this week but a first meeting with Kecmanovic, who looked good in Adelaide this week, should fall the Serb’s way. Take Kecmanovic to win outright, though, with some pressure to deliver here.
