This will be a fascinating clash between 27-year-old Nicolas Jarry, who can break his career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd with one more win in Shanghai, and former world number eight Diego Schwartzman who came in to the tournament ranked 130th. 31-year-old Schwartzman has endured the worst 12 months of his career on tour, bringing a 9-22 record for 2023 into Shanghai, but a three-set upset over current number eight Taylor Fritz felt like a significant turning point after wins over Luca Van Assche and Jiri Lehecka so far. In contrast, Jarry has enjoyed the best season of his career after spending much of the previous two seasons in the wilderness. The Chilean has picked up to ATP titles this season in Santiago and Geneva on his favoured clay but he has impressed on all surfaces, with a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Beijing two weeks ago barely a surprise.
Jarry is yet to drop a set this campaign and Schwartzman has seen three in his three matches so far to suggest backing the Chilean to earn at least one is the sensible way to avoid picking a winner here. Jarry beat Schwartzman, for the first time, in three sets en-route to the Chile Open title back in February.
