THE PREDICTION

World number 43 Mirra Andreeva came back from a set down to beat in-form Taylor Townsend on Wednesday, avoiding a huge let-down given the hype around her in Madrid. The 16-year-old wunderkind began her remarkable debut season here last year as an unknown wildcard, stunning Leylah Fernandez, Beatriz Haddad-Maia and Magda Linette en-route to a last 16 exit to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka, and she will be backed to the hilt against the majority of non-Spaniards as a result.

World number 31 Linda Noskova is three years Andreeva’s senior but still almost as green a player at this level, with her major breakthrough coming at the Australian Open in January when she stunned world number one Iga Swiatek en-route to the quarter-finals. The Czech upset Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets in Stuttgart last week but she was as easily dismissed by an in-form Emma Raducanu to make this a tough call against Andreeva, who showed real grit against Townsend’s aggressive game. Back Andreeva to win at least a set as the likelier of two rising young stars to edge through.
