THE PREDICTION
World number 33 Dan Evans took eventual champion Jannik Sinner to three sets in defeat at the China Open last week, in keeping with his recent strong form. The 33-year-old won four of his five matches, including both of his singles against Arthur Fils and Alex de Minaur, to spearhead Great Britain’s charge into the Davis Cup Finals later this season and he claimed a first ATP 500 title in Washington back in August with some sublime tennis. Evans lost his next two matches after success in Washington and his defeat to Sinner made it two defeats since the Davis Cup to suggest he should be ready to get back on the horse here. 35-year-old Mikhail Kukushkin came back from a set down to stun Alexandre Muller on Thursday, backing up a strong qualifying run, but the veteran should find this too steep of a challenge. Back Evans to win outright, though, with three sets a distinct possibility.
