THE LOWDOWN

MIKAEL YMER

23-year-old Mikael Ymer set a career-high ATP world ranking of 67th back in 2020 and the Swedish number one looks set to exceed that this season after some impressive results last year. Ymer lost in three tight sets to home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis in the Adelaide quarter-finals last week but a first ATP tour final reached at Winston-Salem last August and a shock victory over Hubert Hurkacz here in the first round of the Australian Open last year is proof of his capability.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas has twice reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, losing to Rafael Nadal in 2019 and Daniil Medvedev last season both in straight sets. The 23-year-old endured a season of two halves last year with some dominative early form on the clay swing that culminated in a first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros where he took sets before Novak Djokovic beat him into submission. That experience was the telling factor in much of his inconsistency for the rest of the year but an elbow injury he had been nursing eventually caused him to drop out of the year-end ATP Finals for surgery.

THE PREDICTION

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas is unlikely to emulate his runs to the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year as he continues to recover from elbow surgery but the Greek will be a seriously tough opponent for anybody. The 23-year-old ended world number 82 Mikael Ymer’s best Grand Slam showing here in the third round last season in three sets but it would not be a surprise to see the Swede, also 23, sneak a set this time around. Tsitsipas’ fitness is questionable at present and that makes this match one to avoid for any accumulators. In normal service he should be winning this in straight sets but the Greek has been stunned a few times at this stage of a major in recent memory and there is the slightest scent of an upset about this one too.
