26-year-old Max Purcell set a career-high ATP world ranking of 40th late last season after an excellent spell on US hardcourts but he has struggled to find that same intensity since a valiant effort at the Australian Open. The Aussie snapped a four-match losing streak with an impressive opener over Alex Michelsen on Tuesday but this looks a tough call either way as he takes on world number 123 Michael Mmoh at tour level for the first time. 26-year-old Mmoh beat Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets on Tuesday and he will enjoy a partisan atmosphere here in Houston. The former number 81 is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but take Purcell to roll on his confidence-boosting first win since February to edge through.
