THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Alexander Zverev survived a real scare on Tuesday, twice coming back from a set down to eventually beat Juan Pablo Varillas in five sets. The former world number two is on his way back from a serious foot injury sustained in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, with his previous Grand Slam victory a huge statement four-set result over Carlos Alcaraz in Paris. The German is very far from his best level, both physically and mentally, and it remains to be seen how he recovers after such an effort against Varillas. The door is certainly ajar for lucky loser Michael Mmoh after the American came back from two sets down to Laurent Lokoli on Tuesday, scraping the third-set tiebreak 9-7 to show excellent grit. Mmoh, also 25, is experienced enough to know that the longer this match continues the better chance he has but Zverev could well be better for an early scare and he is not exactly well-known for starting tournaments strongly. Back Zverev to win outright or Mmoh to earn at least a set, perhaps both for an interesting combination, but leave this match out of an accumulator.
