THE PREDICTION

World number 25 Alex de Minaur grabbed an eye-catching win over fourth seed Andrey Rublev on Wednesday, taking out the Russian in straight sets for a second top 10 win of the season so far. The Aussie beat Rafael Nadal at the United Cup for a career-best victory and it took eventual champion Novak Djokovic to oust him from the Australian Open in the round of 16 last time out, suggesting he is in deceptively good form despite results. World number 40 Maxime Cressy is another player on the up after he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Montpellier last week, his fourth final on tour since the start of last season. The 25-year-old overcame Tim van Rijthoven in three sets to react well so soon after that defeat and he could be a significant threat this week. A first meeting between two vastly contrasting styles should make for a thriller but De Minaur’s pace may well be the deciding factor here if he can get to more of Cressy’s throwback serve-and-volleys. The Aussie could be about to enjoy a career-best season on tour and he can be backed to take at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable quarter-finalists.
