THE PREDICTION

Former world number six Matteo Berrettini has won back-to-back matches at tour level for the first time since his surprise run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last summer. The 27-year-old is an excellent, powerful all-courter at this best level but his body has let him down an inordinate amount of times since finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon back in 2021 to hugely hamper his career. World number 61 Lorenzo Sonego beat his compatriot handily last summer at Queen’s but Berrettini avenged that result in the first round at SW19 to lead their head-to-head 2-1 at tour level. 28-year-old Sonego is much better than his current deflated ranking suggests, and probably the more comfortable clay-courter overall, but recent results have been poor as he continues to struggle for any consistency. A three-set victory over Sumit Nagal on Wednesday suggests this match could go to the wire but back Sonego to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
