THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Matteo Berrettini was stunned by an impressive Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of the Canada Masters but he should be the better for it here in Cincinnati. The 26-year-old won back-to-back titles on grass at the Stuttgart Open and Queen’s back in June to promise much ahead of Wimbledon but the Italian cruelly contracted covid-19 on the eve of the Grand Slam where he had finished runner-up in 2021. 24-year-old Frances Tiafoe lost to Taylor Fritz from a set up in Montreal last week and he should be aiming for higher this week in Cincinnati as one of numerous American home hopefuls. Tiafoe reached the round of 16 at the US Open almost a year ago and he has found some huge results this season, most recently just losing out in three thrilling tight sets to Nick Kyrgios at the Citi Open. This is a tougher call than it looks with the conditions suiting Tiafoe a bit more than Berrettini but the Italia can be backed to eventually come through the outright winner.
