THE PREDICTION
World number six Matteo Berrettini had to wait until Friday to finally meet Thiago Monteiro at the Rio Open and the Italian cam every close to losing to the in-form home favourite in a three set result. The 25-year-old reached the third Grand Slam semi-final of his career last month before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in four sets, so a rusty first match back can be forgiven. Berrettini beat Carlos Alcaraz in five sets in the third round in Melbourne via a deciding tiebreak and this looks set to come just as close with the Spaniard winning their first encounter by a decider in three sets at the Vienna Open last season. The 18-year-old already has an ATP title to his name on clay from last season’s Umag Open and he has started the Rio Open in excellent form with two solid wins over in-form Jaume Munar and Federico Delbonis.
This should be fascinating once again and with a decider likely you could be forgiven for taking this match to see three sets and leaving a winner out of it. However, Alcaraz has the better momentum behind him this week in Rio and possibly a few more weapons on clay than his opponent. Take the teenage prodigy to win outright here.
