World number 134 Matteo Arnaldi was part of a proper thriller on Wednesday against fellow Italian Francesco Passaro, just losing out over five sets for the second-successive Next Gen match. The 21-year-old has impressed in Milan as Holger Rune’s replacement despite two defeats so far but he could well still qualify for the semi-finals if he beats Jiri Lehecka in straight sets here and Brandon Nakashima takes out Passaro.
World number 74 Jiri Lehecka beat Francesco Passaro in straight sets on Tuesday to open his Next Gen ATP Finals account but he lost to Brandon Nakashima by the same scoreline on Wednesday. The 21-year-old started 2022 in strong form, with a stand-out run to the semi-finals of the Rotterdam Open back in February, and after a tough summer he recently stunned Grigor Dimitrov at the Stockholm Open.
THE PREDICTION
With Brandon Nakashima likely to beat Francesco Passaro in the later match on Thursday, Matteo Arnaldi has a genuine chance at making an incredible leap into the semi-finals if he can edge past Jiri Lehecka here. The Czech has by far the better chance of winning this first meeting on hardcourt conditions, and with plenty of tour experience behind him, but Arnaldi has won hearts and minds in Milan this week and he will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere that could be the difference. Both of the Italian’s matches have gone to five sets so far, so back the him to take at least two sets here and leave the victor up to chance. The more suitably cautious move would be taking the same option for Lehecka, though.
