World 134 Matteo Arnaldi is still seeking his first tour win but the 21-year-old put in an excellent Next Gen ATP Finals debut on Tuesday in a five-set defeat to Brandon Nakashima. The Italian came in late to Milan as Holger Rune’s replacement and that kind of entrance to the draw makes him dangerous this week.
World 119 Francesco Passaro lost his Next Gen ATP Finals debut in three sets to Jiri Lehecka, ultimately comfortably other than a second-set tiebreak. The 21-year-old recently claimed the first tour-level win of his career at the Firenze Open, beating Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets, before back-to-back defeats to Mackenzie McDonald both there and in Napoli.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating match between two Italian youngsters with just one tour-level win between them. Arnaldi and Passaro will know each other’s games to a tee having played as doubles partners on the Challenger and ITF circuits this season as well as in Junior Grand Slams over the last few years. The Milan crowd will likely side with whomever appears to be the underdog as they try and sculpt the match towards five sets but Arnaldi’s unorthodox qualification and fierce start suggest backing him to take at least two sets is the sensible move.
