THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of the round on Friday if world number three Carlos Alcaraz can bring anything like his best level to meet fellow youngster Matteo Arnaldi, who beat Luca Van Assche in straight sets on Wednesday to look up for the contest. 23-year-old Arnaldi proved himself a serious up-and-comer with a run to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer but he was well beaten by Alcaraz there in their only previous encounter, although he went on to enjoy the better end to the season as part of Italy’s Davis Cup winning squad. 20-year-old Alcaraz has not won a tournament since that famous day last summer at Wimbledon but it should not take long for the Spaniard, defending champion here at Indian Wells, to recover his mojo. Alcaraz brings a two-match losing streak into the desert after rolling his ankle two games into his Rio Open campaign last month but his pre-tournament bravado is unlikely to be unfounded. Arnaldi is well capable of taking this to a decider so back Alcaraz to overcome a potentially choppy start to win outright.
TIP: CARLOS ALCARAZ TO WIN
