MATTEO ARNALDI VS ARTHUR FILS PREDICTION
World number 38 Arthur Fils is the 29th seed here at Roland-Garros after making the seeds before his Lyon Open title ranking points were knocked off last week. The 19-year-old decided not to defend his title in Lyon after winning a quality Challenger event in Bordeaux the week before but it remains to be seen if that was the right call in this first encounter with fellow up-and-comer Matteo Arnaldi.
22-year-old Arnaldi brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 35th into Paris after some strong recent form on clay, with a run to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open ended by eventual champion Casper Ruud last month. The Italian should have faced Fils at the Next Gen ATP Finals late last season but he opted to play for Italy at the Davis Cup Finals, where he beat Alexei Popyrin to help his nation to a historic title alongside Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego.
That international atmosphere should prepare him for what will be a cauldron-like match against Fils on Simonne-Mathieu but the young Frenchman could buckle under the pressure after a first round exit here last season. Both players should take sets in a likely thriller here but back Arnaldi to earn at least one to leave the result well up to chance.
