World number four Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion here at the Miami Open after beating Jannik Sinner to the title this time last season. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells on Sunday, for the second year in a row, and so he will be helping for further 2023 repeats in his last tournament on his favoured hardcourts between now and August. World number 86 Marton Fucsovics conceded just three games to Max Purcell to gain a flying start at the Miami Open but the Hungarian has failed to win back-to-back matches all season. Medvedev leads their tour-level head-to-head record 3-1 after coming back from a set down to win their thrilling third round match at Wimbledon last summer but that was one of three meetings in which sets went both ways to suggest this could be a tough start.
