THE PREDICTION

World number 41 Elise Mertens takes on number 42 Martina Trevisan for the second time this season, with former number 12 Mertens by far the more comfortable in these conditions. The 27-year-old conceded just two games to Trevisan in their first encounter at the Dubai Masters earlier this season but Trevisan has enjoyed some rare form on hardcourts in recent months, perhaps more so than on her favoured clay this year, to look a threat. The Italian overcame Magdalena Frech in three sets on Thursday in the toughest of the pair’s respective round of 16 fixtures and she reached the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Masters last month with a huge result over Ons Jabeur. Mertens should be winning this match in straight sets but an outright call would be the sensible concession.
