THE LOWDOWN

MARTINA TREVISAN

28-year-old Martina Trevisan will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 26th no matter the outcome of this match after a stunning victory over Leylah Fernandez on Tuesday. The Italian is riding a 10-match winning streak after claiming her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open two weeks ago and she has now bettered her best ever Grand Slam showing by going one round further in Paris than her breakthrough run to the last eight here two years ago.

COCO GAUFF

18-year-old Coco Gauff overcame friend and mentor Sloane Stephens in two outstanding sets on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. The current world number 23 can set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 13th by reaching a first major final and despite her already established career on the WTA tour she is considerably younger than either Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez were in their US Open final last September. Gauff reached the quarter-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova

THE PREDICTION

There is some interesting symmetry to this semi-final as Martina Trevisan beat a then 16-year-old Coco Gauff in three sets in the second round of Roland-Garros back in 2020, their only previous meeting. Two years on it is a surprise to see the Italian back in the mix and bettering her run in Paris but no surprise at all to see 18-year-old Gauff improving year-on-year on her remarkable career so far. The American will have to stay level-headed against an opponent on such a winning streak but over three sets Gauff can be backed to edge through this time around.
