THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Katie Boulter will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 35th after reaching the most prestigious final of her career with a stunning week in San Diego, beating top 20 quality in Beatriz Haddad-Maia, Donna Vekic and in-form Emma Navarro. 21-year-old Marta Kostyuk is in a similar position, with this also her most prestigious final, but she would have to win here to set a new career-high of 27th after her brilliant run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January and the expectation is all on her as the promising youngster against a real underdog in Boulter. The Ukrainian’s decision to pass up defending her Austin Open title this week in favour of the more prestigious San Diego 500 was a brave move that has been justified by an excellent run to the final, beating in-form Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and top seed Jessica Pegula in her most recent rounds.
A first meeting between the two will make for a fascinating final here but Boulter has improved with each passing round behind her serve, which has been rock solid all week in San Diego, to suggest three sets are likelier than two. Kostyuk looks the favourite on overall recent form but backing her to win at least a set is the sensible way to avoid a tough result.
TIP: MARTA KOSTYUK TO WIN A SET
