This promises to be one of the best matches of the first round on Monday between world number 29 Amanda Anisimova and number 57 Marta Kostyuk, both of whom should one day be top 10 rivals on the WTA tour. 21-year-old Anisimova found some of her best form this time last season to stun two-time former champion Naomi Osaka in three sets, also beating Belinda Bencic in the second round before a round of 16 defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty. 20-year-old Kostyuk also looked good in Melbourne last season with a run to the third round only-just halted by eighth seed Paula Badosa in three sets. Both players have eye-catching results already this year as Anisimova beat Liudmila Samsonova at Adelaide 2 and Kostyuk stunned Elena Rybakina in three sets at Adelaide 1 last week before a competitive defeat to Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. A first tour-level meeting between the two should edge Anisimova’s way given her run last season but three sets are likelier than two. Back the American to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright pick on its own.
