THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Veronika Kudermetova is the seed in this second round clash with Marketa Vondrousova but recent form suggests the Czech is the reasonable favourite to edge through here. The world number 103 is on the long road back to the top of the sport after suffering an almost season-long injury last spring but she has so far excelled on her comeback, beating Ons Jabeur for the second time this year last week at Indian Wells before a three-set epic ended in defeat to Karolina Muchova in the round of 16. Vondrousova should be a force to be reckoned with on her favoured clay on the incoming swing but there is no need to rush after her recent form. Meanwhile, 25-year-old Kudermetova has lost two of her last three matches since a humbling by Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals of the Qatar Open last month and she has struggled to match her remarkable level from last season so far in 2023. Back Vondrousova to win outright here in a match that could just as easily see three sets as two.
